It's our UN Southampton

Like many other cities around the UK, Southampton has  contributed to the work of the UN.

Here are some of links between Southampton and the UN:

  • Southampton politician Del Singh was Killed by a bomb while working with the UN in Afghanistan. According to the Southern Evening Echo he had more than ten years' experience of working for the UN and other organisations in countries such as, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Sudan  
  • In 1961, the Mayoress of Southampton officially welcomed refugees from Tristan Da Cuna.  Pathe News recorded the event, and in 2008 a Southampton group was set up by Shirley Firth, mother of Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth in response to the plight of more than 200 local asylum seekers from more than 25 countries. The Daily Echo reported how up to 100 refugees visited a centre  where the Red Cross provided hot food and winter clothing to many of those who could have spent Christmas alone. 
  • Marchwood Military Port Regiment were deployed as United Nations Peacekeepers, on tour to Cyprus.
