For many, Nottingham is best known for its connections to Robin Hood, but it is also bidding to become one of just a few UNESCO designated Cities of Literature and, like many communities across the UK, Nottingham has other local connections to the United Nations.

Here are some of those connections:

  • Nottingham provides safe homes for refugees displaced by war, famine or other disasters. Its community run Refugeee Council and organisations like Nottingham's Arimathea Trust, provide support and friendship to refugees, while Nottingham Contemporary, celebrates the journeys people have made, as part of Refugee Week. Nottingham's Playhouse Theatre has highlighted the status and issues facing refugee children, through a play called 'Refugee Boy' and provide a supporting online educational resource pack.
  • Nottingham businesses connect with the UN. For example, Marco Pierre's White Steakhouse Bar and Grill,  participates in the United Nations Environment Programme and Nottingham based Eagle Scientific, work with and supply UN agencies.
  • Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, was the founding director of the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy. He has acted as a consultant to the World Bank, the European Commission and the United Nations.
