It's our UN Cardiff

Like other major cities in the UK, Cardiff has its own heritage of links to the UN.

Here are some of the connections between Cardiff, Wales and the UN.

  • Cardiff was officially recognised as a 'City of Sanctuary', in 2014, only the 7th UK city to achieve that award, at the time.
  • Welsh soldiers took part in the UN's first armed intervention, in Korea. Families of those lost are contributing photos of those lost as part of a UN memorial,  while an 83 year old Welsh veteran recounts his memories and service in that conflict.  Welsh soldiers also served as UN peacekeepers in Cyprus.
  • The Art Department at Cardiff High School, engaged with a project aimed at helping a Zambian Community achieve UN's MDGs - including a reduction in child mortality, an improvement in maternal health, greater environmental sustainability and universal primary education.
