Here are some of the links that the Brighton area has with the global work of the UN:

  • Brighton has been designated as a city of sanctuary for refugees and asylum seekers with  Cllr Leo Littman stating "[o]ur city has a well-deserved reputation for offering sanctuary to those who, through no fault of their own, need it most "
  • UNESCO have recognised the Brighton and Lewis Downs as an outstanding natural landscape and granted it the international accolade of Biosphere Reserve status
  • Brighton hosted the international UN conference in 1953
  • Sir Richard Jolly, studied at Brighton college and lives locally. Amoung his many links to the UN are that he served as a senior UN officer, was deputy executive director of UNICEF for 13 years and was special consultant to the UN Secretary-General on North Sea issues. More recently Sir Richard served as co-director of the UN International History Project.
