Northern Ireland - curriculum links

The revised Northern Ireland curriculum seeks to "meet the needs of young people, society, the economy and environment in the 21st Century". The primary curriculum is made up of Religious Education and the following Areas of Learning:

  • Language and Literacy
  • Mathematics and Numeracy
  • The Arts
  • The World Around Us
  • Personal Development and Mutual Understanding
  • Physical Education

The post-primary curriculum includes a new area of Learning for Life and Work, made up of Employability, Personal Development, Local and Global Citizenship and Home Economics (Key Stage 3).  

In addition, it is made up of Religious Education and the following Areas of Learning:

  • Language and Literacy
  • Mathematics and Numeracy
  • Modern Languages
  • The Arts
  • Environment and Society
  • Physical Education
  • Science and Technology

The chart cross-references each of the International Days to the four statutory areas of the school curriculum listed above. Using it in conjunction with the following extracts from the National Curriculum will hopefully assist teachers in making optimum use of the UNA-ID in their schools.
