“HOST UK” was the topic of a presentation to TRUNA by Katherine Varden on Saturday 26 May. Katherine is the Voluntary Regional Organiser for HOST UK in Hampshire, Surrey and SW London.
HOST UK arranges for international students to enjoy a day, weekend or three-night stay with British hosts in the UK. She gave numerous heart-warming (and often amusing) examples of how the British hosts welcome guests from some 120 countries for meals and cheerful chat and the activities they might ordinarily engage in and to show international students in the UK what a warm British welcome can mean. Katherine described them as "my mini-UN". Often friendships emerge which last a lifetime. The British hosts are sometimes later invited to their guests’ weddings.
