UNA-UK expresses concern at US refugee admission ban

As a result of a wide-ranging executive order signed on Friday, the United States has temporarily halted the admission of all refugees.

Refugees have, and deserve, legal protection and rights under international agreements. Many have made perilous journeys, fleeing horrific circumstances in their own country.

An international approach to refugees is in every country's interest. America has a long and proud history in seeking out and accepting refugees.

UNA-UK supports the joint statement from the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. The statement reiterates the deep need for an international response to the forced migration crisis and expresses hope that the US will continue its strong leadership role and long tradition of protecting those who are fleeing conflict and persecution. As the statement says:

The longstanding U.S. policy of welcoming refugees has created a win-win situation: it has saved the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world who have in turn enriched and strengthened their new societies. The contribution of refugees and migrants to their new homes worldwide has been overwhelmingly positive.

We strongly believe that refugees should receive equal treatment for protection and assistance, and opportunities for resettlement, regardless of their religion, nationality or race.
