New World Summer 2013: Rule of law - the will of the people?

The Summer 2013 issue of New World explores the rule of law and its intersection with the UN's three main pillars of work: peace and security, human rights and sustainable development.

UNA-UK's Chairman sets the scene by asking what it is that we mean when we talk of the rule of law, and highlights why its implementation can be so difficult in practice.  UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson provides a broad overview of the UN's rule of law activities, and points to the General Assembly's show of political support for this area at last September's High-level Meeting.

Malcolm Evans argues that torture and rendition will always be incompatible with the rule of law and democratic principles, and Richard Dictus shares the experiences of UN Volunteers, who support the conduct of elections all over the world. Miša Zgonec-Rožej explains the workings of the International Court of Justice, the UN's main judicial organ, whilst our New World feature explores the UN's own accountability issues through its legal immunity in national courts.

Our web exclusives also provide a whole host of content related to the rule of law, including articles on:

- The ICC and Africa
- Peacebuilding in South Sudan
- How the development field addresses rule of law issues
- A closer look at the work of the UN's Peacebuilding Commission
- How to address emerging security challenges
