Mali: statement by Chair of UN parliamentary group

In a statement before the House of Lords on 21 January 2013, Lord Hannay, Chair of the UN All-Party Parliamentary Group, said that the terror attacks in Mali should not be linked to the recent “invasion of Mali”.

He also urged the UK government to “mount a really successful international operation” to restore proper governance in Mali. Further, he was of the view that when the UN entrusts organisations such as ECOWAS with “tough business” of maintaining stability in the region, the resultant costs of the organisation should not be borne by a few groups alone. Instead, the costs should form part of the “assessed contributions” of the UN member states. He also referred to the recommendation of two UN panels in this regard.
