International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2019

UNA-UK is pleased to announce this year’s events to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on 23 May 2019 in Whitehall, London.

Peacekeepers' Day conference

This annual conference, jointly organised by UNA-UK, UNA-Westminster and RUSI, is the UK’s most authoritative public review of UN peacekeeping activities – bringing together UN practitioners, diplomats, military and the public for a discussion of the most pressing issues in peacekeeping today.

The agenda features peacekeeping experts and practitioners from around the world, including Professor Alice Hills, Durham University; Professor Paul Williams, George Washington University; Lenneke Sprik, International Security Specialist; and Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Ambassador Ellen Margrethe Løj, who served as the Special Representative of the Secretary General and head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) from 2008-2012, and as the Special Representative of the Secretary General and head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan from 2014-2016. She will deliver the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Lecture at this year's conference to mark the International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2019.

Registration

The conference will take place at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Whitehall, London, SW1A 2ET starting at 1000. The conference fee will be £25, with a special rate of £15 for students, this includes related documents, morning refreshments and lunch.

Book your tickets here.

Peacekeepers' Day memorial

Our annual memorial ceremony in remembrance of peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the service of global peace will take place at 13:30 at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

Members of the diplomatic corps will be joined by UK Government officials and UN veterans to lay wreaths and pay their respects to the 3,818 peacekeepers who have lost their lives while deployed with the UN. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

No registration is necessary for the Cenotaph memorial. If you are an Embassy or High Commission seeking to participate in the ceremony, please contact Serena Coulson, peacekeepersday@una.org.uk, 020 7766 3446.
