UNA Harpenden: Public meeting - Syrian refugees

Published on

Updated:

Irene Austin from Herts Welcomes Syrian Families talked about the UK Government’s Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Programme which would give refugee status in the UK to Syrians unable to cope in refugee camps (e.g. people who are ill, disabled, elderly, or have suffered torture or sexual abuse).

Ms Austin explained that local authorities would be funded to provide accommodation and services for healthcare, English tuition, etc. for refugees. Nine Hertfordshire councils had signed up to the scheme and each would accept up to 10 refugees per year for 5 years.

However, accommodation may be an issue since using council housing stock for refugees could create resentment from people who have been waiting for a council place. Voluntary organisations could therefore provide additional local and personal support to refugees.
