UNA Edinburgh: An evening with Carl Wilkens

Carl was the director of development charity Adventist Development and Relief Agency International (ADRA) in Rwanda in 1994/5 during the genocide.

After evacuating his wife and children to Burundi, Carl decided to stay in Rwanda despite opposition from co-workers, relative and the United States Government. As the only American left in the country, Carl undertook dangerous trips on a daily basis to provide food, medicine and water to trapped groups of orphans. His work saved the lives of hundreds and Carl has now gone on to set up an educational non-profit organisation, World Outside My Shoes, with his wife Teresa.
