Regional development programme

What is the Regional Development Programme?

The Regional Development Programme (RDP) is an initiative developed by the UNYSA-UK Youth Council to connect UNYSA branches to others in their region.

By forging regional hubs, RDP hopes to create opportunities to share knowledge, experience and expertise in order to create a stronger and more active UNYSA network in the UK.

What is the purpose of RDP?
Although there are approximately 10,000 local branch and individual members of UNYSA-UK. UNYSA-UK's highly decentralised nature means that members often miss out on the chance to share their experiences, learn from one another and develop joint projects. The RDP aims to further more active cooperation to achieve the common aims that we all share.

Date: TBC (preliminary booking for November 7 2009)

In 2008, representatives from eight UNYSA branches across the UK came together to begin establishing a Northern and Southern UNYSA region.

Together they met to brainstorm and agree on the underlying purpose and objectives of each region. The overall aim of both regions can be summarised as follows:

  • Increase communication and collaboration between branches as a means of strengthening them
  • Become more effective in achieving the common aims of all UN Youth Associations throughout the world.

This year's UNYSA-UK Youth Council is looking to bring even more branches and non-branch members together to build a stronger and more active UNYSA network in the UK.

The Youth Council is encouraging all branches to create a position for an elected Regional Representative on their committee to take part in regular meetings with other Representatives in the region and develop and push forward a joint programme of initiatives .

All interested non-branch UNYSA members are also encouraged to take part and are eligible to act as an independent Regional Representative.

How do UNYSA-UK regions operate?

The idea behind regional hubs is that each UNYSA branch elects a person to act as a Regional Representative who will then meet on a regular basis (online and in person) with other Representatives in the region to push forward joint initiatives and projects.

Interested members who are not part of a branch can also become involved as independent Representatives through their regular attendance at meetings. Participants learn from the experience of others, and develop an agenda of joint activities in order to drive the work of the region forward.

How can UNYSA-UK members get involved in the RDP?
  • Become a Regional Representative for your region’s Executive Committee
  • Support taking part in your region’s Annual Regional Conference
  • Join the Regional Development Team on the Youth Council
Who would make a good Regional Representative?

For branches deciding who to elect as their Regional Representative, it is important to know what kind of person would do well in the role. The ideal Regional Representative would:

  • have some experience and knowledge of how a branch and UNYSA-UK works, as well as the challenges that both face
  • generate ideas on how to make improvements plus a commitment to seeing UNYSA-UK grow and flourish,
  • be a good team player

Once you have elected your Regional Representative, get them to create a new email account using the formula of regionalrep.universityunysa@gmail.com and get in touch with the Youth Council’s Regional Development Team.

We look forward to hearing from you!

7th November (tbc): The official launch of the Regional Development Programme.

The main aims of the meeting will be:

  • For each region to discuss, brainstorm and agree on their Regional Constitutions
  • For each region to elect a 'Regional Chair' who would be responsible for working closely with the Regional Development Team on the Youth Council to drive forward initiatives within the region, including the hosting of regular on-line meetings with Regional Representatives
  • For each region to discuss, brainstorm and agree on a realistic agenda of initiatives to implement over the coming year.
