News
Registration now open for UN Forum - 12 June 2010
Take part in UN Forum 2010, the UK’s largest civil society gathering on the United Nations. This exciting UNA-UK one-day event will feature presentations by high-level speakers including Dr Hans Blix, former head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, as well as films, workshops and panel debates on the UN's work in support of peace, development and human rights. UK launch of ICNND report on eliminating nuclear threats
On 4 February, the report of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament - Eliminating Nuclear Threats: A Practical Agenda for Global Policymakers - was launched in Parliament at an event co-sponsored by UNA-UK and chaired by Lord Hannay.

New education pack on the United Nations
UNA-UK has produced an exciting new education pack in collaboration with UNESCO Associated Schools. The pack, entitled ‘UN Matters’, offers a comprehensive introduction to the United Nations with the aim of developing students understanding of the UN system and how it works for peace, development and human rights.

Haiti earthquake appeal
In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, international organisations, government ministers and charities from the all over the world are working together and pooling their resources in efforts to stabilise the situation. UNA LYMINGTON
The branch will hold a prize-giving for an essay competition on the ‘Role of the United Nations in today's world’ from 4.30 to 6pm at Brockenhurst College, Lyndhurst Road, Brockenhurst SO42 7ZE (located 5-10 minutes from Brockenhurst Railway Station).

13-14 February
UNA CANTERBURY
The branch will hold a meeting on Saturday 13 February entitled ‘The UN roadshow’ which will include an exhibition, docu-dramas and workshops. Lunch and refreshments are also available, find out more by contacting Sheila below. This event will take place from 10am to 2pm at St Dunstan's Church Hall, 80 London Road, Canterbury CT2 8LS. 'The UN roadshow' continues on Sunday 14 February with services held at St Dunstan's Church, led by preachers Rt Rev Richard Llewellin & Rev Michael Fulljames.

UNA EXETER & DISTRICT
The branch will host a conference entitled ‘Beyond Copenhagen, the outcome and what next?’ with speakers from the Met Office and Exeter University. This event will take place from 1.15 to 5.30pm at the Jury’s Inn Hotel Exeter, Western Way, Exeter EX1 2DB.

UNA BEXHILL & HASTINGS
The branch will hold its Annual General Meeting, followed by a talk given by Christian peace activist John Lynes on ‘Peace-making in the Middle East’. This event will take place from 10.15am at Parkhurst Hall, behind Sackville Rd Methodist Church, Bexhill.

UNA NEWBURY
The branch will hold a coffee morning hosted by the Mayor Cllr Kuldip Singh Kang in aid of 'Citizens for change', a local project supporting a school in Kisuma, Kenya. Becky Chaplin, (Kennet School, Thatcham) will give a presentation and a ‘bring-and-buy-sale’ or tombola is planned. Help on the day and homemade cakes would be much appreciated. This event will take place from 10am to 12pm at Newbury Town Hall, Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire RG14 5AA.

UNA HARPENDEN
The branch will hold a public meeting entitled ‘Loss of biodiversity – why should we care?’ addressed by Monica MacDevette, Deputy Director of the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge. This event will take place from 11am at St Nicholas, Church Hall, Harpenden AL5 2TP.

UNA-UK Company Annual General Meeting
The 16th Annual General Meeting of the Company will take place from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday, 6 March 2010 in the Eastwood Room, Farmers Club, 3 Whitehall Court, London SW1A 2EL.  Tea and coffee will be served from 3.30pm.  
All UNA-UK members have been sent a letter enclosing the following documents:
- formal AGM notice
- draft financial summary for the year ended 30 June 2009
- minutes of the AGM held on 5 June 2009
- profiles of members standing for the four elected places on the UNA-UK Board of Directors

UNA WESTMINSTER
The branch has teamed up with Clifford Chance LLP, the International Relations Committee and the Bar Council to invite you to the 8th Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen International Law Lecture with Stephen Hockman QC who will speak on ‘The case for an International Court for the Environment’. This event will take place from 6.30pm at The Lecture Theatre, Brunei Gallery Building, School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG. UNA PUTNEY & ROEHAMPTON
The branch will hold a meeting to mark International Women's Day with the theme entitled ‘Crisis for women in the Democratic Republic of Congo - how can the UN help?’. Speakers include Vijay Mehta from Action for UN Renewal and representatives of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).  This event will take place from 7.30pm at the Methodist Church Hall, corner Upper Richmond Road and Gwendolen Avenue, Putney SW15.

UNA SHEFFIELD
The branch will hold a joint meeting in collaboration with the UNYSA branch at Sheffield University. Craig Barnett, co-founder of the City of Sanctuary Movement, will give a talk on the influx of asylum seekers nationwide and the response of cities to this trend. This event will take place from 7.30pm at Lecture Room 2, Hicks Building, University of Sheffield, Hounsfield Road, Sheffield S3 7RH.

UNA BIRKENHEAD
The branch will host a talk and Q&A with Chris Davies MEP on ‘Copenhagen and the limits of the UN process’. Chris Davies is a Liberal Democrat Euro-MP for the North West and attended the recent Copenhagen Conference on climate change. This event will take place at 7.30pm at the Westbourne Hall Community Centre, 59 Westbourne Road, West Kirby, Wirral CH48 4DQ.

UNA TYNEDALE
The branch will hold a members' meeting and host a talk by Fiona Hall MEP on the developing links between the European Parliament and the United Nations. This event will take place from 2pm at the Quaker Meeting House, Branch End, Stocksfield NE43 7NA.

UNA SOUTHAMPTON
The branch will host a one-day human rights conference entitled ‘Born free and equal?. Speakers will include Rob Atkinson (Amnesty International) on poverty and human rights violations, and Sister Teresa (founder of the Medaille Trust) on trafficking of women.  There will also be workshops on women's rights, children's rights, asylum seekers, refugees, and homelessness. The conference is supported by a coalition of local groups interested in human rights. This event will take place from 10am to 4.30pm at the Central Baptist Church, Devonshire Road, The Polygon, Southampton SO15 2GY. Fee £5.00 to include lunch. Dirty Business Film Series: Yes Men Fix the World

Directed by Andy Bichlbaum and winner of the Berlin Film Festival, 'Yes Men Fix the World’ is a screwball true story that follows a couple of gonzo political activists as they infiltrate the world of big business and pull off outrageous pranks that highlight the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with ‘Yes Man’ Mike Bonanno and Amnesty UK Business and Economic Relations Campaign Director Peter Frankental.

Caesar's Coin: Morality and Taxes

What, if anything, is the connection between corporate taxation and morality?  Rt Hon. Stephen Timms, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and leading politicians from other parties discuss this issue in relation to the development agenda in the global south.
