UNA-UK to host António Guterres, UN Secretary-General

UNA-UK will host H.E. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, for his first major public speech in the UK on the afternoon of 10 May at Central Hall Westminster.

This event will take place at 1300 and will finish at 1430. Doors will open at 1200. Guests are encouraged to arrive as early as possible to secure their seats as they cannot be reserved.

Mr Guterres’s speech will be followed by an interactive session.

Tickets are limited and we expect them to sell out quickly. Secure your place now.

Mr Guterres took office on 1 January 2017, following the most transparent selection process in UN history, which UNA-UK campaigned to achieve. Prior to his appointment, he served as UN High Commissioner for Refugees (2005–2015), earning a reputation for speaking truth to power, and as Prime Minister of Portugal (1995–2002), during which time he was heavily involved in the international effort to resolve the crisis in East Timor.

Mr Guterres takes up the UN’s reins at a time of growing global instability, when many have lost confidence in political leadership and institutions. Having witnessed firsthand the suffering in refugee camps and war zones, he is determined to make human dignity the core of his work, and to serve as a peace broker, a bridge-builder and a promoter of reform and innovation. This will be the Secretary-General’s first major public speech since taking office.

We hope you will join us for this rare opportunity to hear directly from the UN’s top official.
