Biography

Employment

Sam Daws has been Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the UK since 2004. From 2000 to 2003 he served as First Officer in the Executive Office of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. From 1994 to 2000 he co-directed a Geneva and Oxford based international consultancy advising governments, the UN System and NGOs on aspects of UN policy and procedure. Prior to that he headed the UN and Conflict Programme at UNA-UK, was a researcher at the House of Commons, and worked for the Quaker UN Office in Geneva. He has served on working attachment to the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (Research Analysts - Global Issues), and on FCO recruitment and policy performance evaluation panels.

Academic

Mr Daws was a visiting fellow in international law at Cambridge University, and in UN studies at Yale University. He has a degree in social anthropology with African and Asian studies, a masters in international conflict analysis, and undertook doctoral studies in international relations at New College, Oxford. He has been a visiting lecturer at University College London and the UN University in Tokyo, and has written or co-edited six books on the UN including "The Oxford Handbook on the United Nations" (2007, OUP).

Governance and management

Mr Daws has served as Trust Secretary to the UNA Charitable Trust, and as a trustee on a number of national and international non-profit organisations. He has a postgraduate qualification in Grantmaking, Philanthropy and Social Investment from CASS Business School, and completed the Foundation and Endowment Asset Management course of London Business School. He is an alumnus of the Top Management Programme of the UK National School of Government, and of the Leadership for Sustainable Development course of the UN University International Leadership Academy in Amman. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Academic Council on the UN System.
