LOBBY FOR THE UN 2008-9

On 23 October, the before UN Day, UNA-UK held an event at the Foreign Press Association to launch its 2008-9 LOBBY FOR THE UN campaign. This annual initiative aims to foster dialogue between voters and Parliamentarians on UN issues, and to push for robust action on UNA-UK policy priorities.

2008-09 policy prioties

- The UN Millennium Development Goals - in September world leaders convened to renew the push to achieve the Goals by 2015; what action should states prioritise?

- Child rights - in December the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights will turn 60; UNA-UK is assessing the UK's record in meeting its international human rights obligations

- Climate change - the end of 2009 marks the deadline for the UN to broker a new global climate deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol.

- Nuclear non-proliferation - between now and 2010 states will be preparing for a major conference at the UN on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which commits states to the ultimate goal of complete nuclear disarmament; what can the UK do to further this agenda?
