LOBBY FOR THE UN 2005-6

On 9 March 2005, UNA-UK, Action for UN Renewal and a host of other partners held a mass civil society event to launch the 2005-6 'Lobby for the UN' campaign. This annual initiative aims to foster dialogue between voters and Parliamentarians on UN issues, and to push for robust action on UNA-UK policy priorities.

Lobby for the UN 2005-6 focussed on the following issues:

1. The UN Millennium Development Goals

2. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

3. The UK's international human rights obligations

The launch event featured presentations by:

- Tony Colman MP, Chair of the UN All-Party Parliamentary Group
- Sam Daws, Executive Director of UNA-UK, on the Report of the UN High-Level Panel
- Sir Richard Jolly, Chair of UNA-UK, on the concept of human security
- Salil Shetty, Director of the UN Millennium Campaign, on achieving the MDGs
- Bruce Kent, Vice-President of CND, on advancing nuclear non-proliferation
- Maniza Ntekim, Parliamentary Officer of Amnesty International UK, on strengthening UN human rights machinery
