UK to ratify cluster munitions ban in 2010

Yesterday, Prime Minister Gordon Brown told Parliament that the UK will ratify the Convention on Cluster Munitions during the 2009/10 legislative programme. This means that the UK is on track to complete the process in early 2010 and to become one of the first 30 states to ratify this groundbreaking treaty.

UNA-UK played a prominent role in securing UK backing for the cluster munitions convention. Following the UK's signature of the convention in Oslo in December 2008, UNA-UK has been calling on the government to make ratification a priority.

The convention will enter into force once 30 states have ratified it. So far, just 10 out of the 98 countries that signed the treaty have done so.
