UN Day 2009: united in action to make the world a safer, better place
24 October is UN Day - it marks the formal establishment of the United Nations in 1945. On this day and every day throughout the year, the UN works to secure peace, progress and protection for all the world's people.
The UN delivers more humanitarian aid than any other organisation. It vaccinates 40% of the world's children. It feeds more than 100 million people and helps over 30 million refugees fleeing war and persecution. And more peacekeepers than ever are deployed across the globe.
In his UN Day message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said 'this is a unique moment in world affairs. Multiple crises - food, fuel, financial, flu - are hitting at once. Climate change looms larger every day... Each illustrates a 21st-century truth: we share one planet, one home... On this UN Day, let us resolve to redouble our efforts...to make the world a safer, better place."
UNA-UK is encouraging members and supporters to commemorate UN Day in two ways:
Hold a Flag Day collection
Flag Day' collections are a great way for UNA branches and regions to:
- raise money for the UNA Trust and UNICEF UK
- recruit new members
- spread the word about UNA-UK
UNA-UK can send your branch/region everything it needs to organise a successful Flag Day: tins, sashes, stickers, leaflets and more. For more information and to read the 2009 'Flag Day' guidance notes, visit www.una.org.uk/flagday or contact Rich Nelmes on 020 7766 3456 or nelmes@una.org.uk
Come to the launch event of 'Lobby for the UN 2009-10'
3.30pm, 27 October 2009 @ Mothers Union, 24 Tufton Street, London SW1P 3RB
Lobby for the UN is UNA-UKs annual campaign to promote dialogue between voters and MPs on UN issues throughout the parliamentary year. With both the Copenhagen climate change summit and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference coming up, we are asking members to aim high: lobby your MP to secure a new global climate deal and a world free from nuclear weapons!
This is your last chance to register! Visit www.una.org.uk/lobby or contact Georgina Banks on 020 7766 3457 or banks@una.org.uk
