WFUNA concludes successful Plenary Assembly in Seoul
The World Federation of UNAs (WFUNA) held its 39th Plenary Assembly on 9-12 August 2009 in Seoul, under the banner 'Global Citizens for the United Nations'. These triennial meetings give UN Associations from around the world the chance to share ideas, explore means of cooperation, and debate a host of issues on the UN's agenda. 122 delegates from 49 UN Associations attended the conference, at which eight new UNAs were welcomed as members of WFUNA.
UNA-UK's delegation was led by UNA-UK Executive Director Sam Daws and consisted of Dr Gari Donn (UNA-UK Board member and convenor of Edinburgh UNA branch), Nick Boucher (President of UNA-UK's youth wing, UNYSA) and Tim Jarman (UNA-UK Young Professionals Network). Dr Donn presented 'Towards a world without nuclear weapons', a resolution passed by UNA-UK's Annual Conference and adopted by WFUNA in Seoul.
Tim Jarman represented UNA-UK's Young Professionals Network at a meeting of the Global Young Professionals, and Nick Boucher drummed up support for UNYSA's nuclear disarmament campaign - STOP THE SPREAD - among other UN youth associations. UNYSA's campaign pack was presented with a certificate of merit by Dr Hans Blix, former head of the IAEA and outgoing WFUNA President.
Ambassador Park Soo Gil was elected to succeed Dr Blix as WFUNA President from January 2010 while new WFUNA Secretary-General Bonian Golmohammadi has already taken over the reins. UNA-UK Executive Director Sam Daws was appointed as a member of the WFUNA Executive Committee.
