Welcome to New World Winter 2011 We begin with a candid piece by UN scholar Thomas G. Weiss, who argues wryly that world leaders should realise that it is not quixotic for the UN to occasionally function as it was intended. Barbara Crossette, UN correspondent for The Nation, analyses the organisation's relationship with the media and Carl Soderbergh of Minority Rights Group International considers how well the UN's statebased structure has served those whose rights are often abused by their governments. The issue also attempts to dispel misconceptions about the UN. Setting the record straight is vital at a time when UN funding is under threat. Whilst the US is the largest contributor to the organisation's budget, its total contributions to the UN were about $7.7bn this year – less than 1% of the federal budget and a little more than the country's citizens are predicted to spend on Halloween. Further contributions include a piece by Oliver McTernan of the organisation Forward Thinking on Palestine's bid for UN membership. We want to hear your thoughts on the UN's role in today's world More than 65 years after it was founded, is the UN still indispensable or has it been superceded by regional bodies or groups like the G20? The UN: indispensable or irrelevant - where do you stand? Click here to give us your views New look New World This issue of New World introduces the magazine's new design and format. Following suggestions received through our readers' survey, we have launched 'Talking Points' - a new feature tackling topical issues from different perspectives. We have also sought to address reader requests for bite-size facts and figures on the UN. The new layout also provides for more editorial content from our members. This time, Ravi Kumar of UNA Birmingham branch writes about caste and discrimination, Sara Traubel of UNA Youth Aberdeen enthuses about UNA-UK's 'Where will the UN take you? competition, and Aaron Akinyemi of the UNA-UK Young Professionals Network reports on the UN NGO conference on sustainability. We hope you like the 'new look New World'. Comments to the Editor on samarasinghe (a) una.org.uk More articles coming soon...
