5-7 September 2007, New York
"Climate Change: How it Impacts us all"
This first UN Department of Public Information NGO conference on climate change, which attracted representatives of more than 500 NGOs from some 62 countries, was attended by Juliet and Tony Colman, President of UNA London & SE Region. The conference was chaired by Achim Steiner of United Nations Environment Programme in the absence of the Secretary-General and was built around two plenary sessions and seven roundtables addressing the following themes:
- The Scientific Evidence
- Indigenous Peoples, Culture & Traditional Knowledge
- Water Security
- Best Land Use Practices
- Energy
- New UN Framework (streamlining the system)
- Sustainable Development, Accountability & Ethical Standards
The conference concluded with the adoption of a final declaration on 7 September, making recommendations for individual action as well as collaborative work to combat climate change. Click here to read the document.
A number of other meetings took place on the sidelines of the conference. Juliet had separate meetings with UNIFEM in her new coordinating role across all the developed country national committees for UNIFEM, and Tony met with the Ford Foundation in his role as the incoming chair of the One World Trust.
