Based on the celebrated Model UN methodology

‘Uniting the Nations’ is a role-play simulation of a UN General Assembly debate to agree a resolution on the Olympic Truce. The Model UN methodology is an internationally renowned learning experience that teaches key life skills such as leadership, public speaking, negotiation, group communications, empathy, planning and research. Participants also gain greater understanding of pressing global issues, multilateral systems, international processes and the history and culture of other countries. All participants will benefit from working collectively to agree a resolution, as well as meeting people from diverse backgrounds and working in the formal setting of a United Nations HQ building.

London 2012 Inspire mark

‘Uniting the Nations’has been granted the prestigious London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.

Participating schools can also become part of the London 2012 Get Set network and claim tickets to the London Games (deadline to register for the Get Set network is 16 December 2011).

Prizes

Every participating pupil will receive a tournament certificate and be given six months free membership of UNA-UK. Medals will be awarded to the best performing delegations. The delegation judged overall to be the most successful will win a trip to visit the United Nations in New York (for three pupils and a teacher).

The performance of delegations will be judged on a range of criteria including quality of argument, authenticity of argument, quality of presentation/speaking and negotiation and diplomacy skills. The top three delegations will be awarded bronze, silver and gold medals. The gold medal winning delegation will win a trip to visit the United Nations in New York. UNA-UK to provide return flights UK/NY, 3 nights’ accommodation booked directly by UNA-UK, and £400 per person to cover all other UK and US expenses. The prize is for three pupils plus a teacher. It is possible for participants to extend their stay in New York at their own expense and for schools to increase the number of pupils going on the prize trip at their own expense. All participants will be expected to arrange their own travel insurance and provide UNA-UK with a copy of insurance certificate prior to travel.

Further information

Bearing in mind the workload pupils have at this time of the year, we have decided that submitting position papers is now optional for delegates. Delegates can still write their own position papers, which would assist in drafting their opening address, developing a better understanding of the country they are representing and where it stands on the Olympic truce; however they do not have to pre-submit these to UNA-UK before the tournament.

Schools will be given additional support if they would like to organise cultural activities associated with the country/countries represented by their delegation(s) and will be encouraged to hold their own mini-Model United Nations tournaments within their schools prior to the event.

After the tournament, schools will be given the opportunity to establish a ‘Permanent Delegation’ or UNA-UK local branch, as part of UNA-UK’s ‘Generation United Nations’ campaign. This will allow on-going support for citizenship education and engaging with the world of the UN to help inspire the next generation of young internationalists.

When signing up to participate in ‘Uniting the Nations’, we would like to make schools aware that photos and audio/visual material featuring participants from the event will be used as part of the UNA-UK’s future publicity and promotional material.
