Sir Nicholas Young biography

Sir Nicholas Young is Chief Executive of the British Red Cross, the UK’s leading voluntary disaster response organisation and part of the international Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. In this capacity, he is responsible for 3,000 staff, around 40,000 volunteers and an annual budget of over £200 million.

Sir Nicholas is active in the international Red Cross Movement and in the work of the UK voluntary sector as a whole. He is a member of several non-profit and advisory bodies, including the UK Foreign Secretary’s Human Rights Advisory Group and the Humanitarian Forum. Prior to re-joining the Red Cross in 2001, he was Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Relief and Director of UK Operations at the Red Cross, before which he spent five years with the Sue Ryder Foundation setting up new homes. He began his career as a commercial solicitor. He was knighted in 2007 for his services to cancer care.
