Thursday 14 EXTERNAL EVENT
John Borrie, senior researcher at UNIDIR (UN Institute for Disarmament Research), has recently written and published a book entitled 'Unacceptable Harm - A History of How the Treaty to Ban Cluster Munitions was Won' documenting the international efforts to deal with the humanitarian impacts of cluster munitions. An event to mark the publication of this book will be held from 4pm to 6pm in the Boothroyd Room, Portcullis House, Bridge Street, London SW1A 2LW. The author, John Borrie will speak at this event as well as a number of other individuals involved in the international process to ban these weapons.

Human rights, sovereignty and military intervention - a dialogue with J.S. Mill

Speaker: Michael Doyle is Harold Brown Professor of International and Public Affairs, of Law, and of Political Science at Columbia Law School. A former professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton and special advisor to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan Professor Doyle will give a talk on ‘Human rights, sovereignty and military intervention - a dialogue with J.S. UNA Southampton will host a one-day human rights conference entitled ‘Born free and equal?'. Speakers will include Rob Atkinson (Amnesty International) on poverty and human rights violations, and Sister Teresa (founder of the Medaille Trust) on trafficking of women. There will also be workshops on women's rights, children's rights, asylum seekers, refugees and homelessness. The conference is supported by a coalition of local groups interested in human rights. Tom Franck was one of the most significant international lawyers in the English-speaking world during the past half-century: 27 May is the first anniversary of his death.
