John and Elnora Fergson were long-standing supporters of both UNA-UK and the University of Birmingham. On 23 February, Lord Hannay of Chiswick (former Chair of UNA-UK and former pro-Chancellor of Birmingham University) delivered the inaugural lecture dedicated to their memory. 23 February: UNA-UK strategic planning 'roadshow' for UNA Central Regionheld in Birmingham. 26 February: UNA-UK strategic planning 'roadshow' for UNA Southern Counties held in Newbury. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 March: Lewisham UNA Symposium: UN achievements and challenges This event took place at 6pm in Room LG 01 of the New Academic Building, Goldsmiths, New Cross, London SW14 6NW. Neville Grant (former UNDO consultant), Mans Nyberg (UNHCR) and Professor Sanjay Seth (Head of the Politics Department at Goldsmiths) delivered presentations, which were followed by a panel discussion. 5 March: UNA-UK strategic planning 'roadshow' for UNA Eastern Region held in Cambridge. 11 March: UNA Putney and Roehampton held a meeting on 'Trafficking of women into the UK' at 7.30pm at the Community Church Hall, Werter Road, Putney, London SW15 2LL. 12 March: UNA-UK strategic planning 'roadshow' for UNA Wales held in Cardiff (TBC) 16 March: Lessons learned from the Rwanda Criminal Tribunal - Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen Law Lecture UNA Westminster, in partnership with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), held the annual Ruth Steinkraus-Cohen international law lecture in the SOAS Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre. The Rt. Hon Sir Dennis Byron QC shared his views on the work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the lessons learned. His presentation was followed by a reception. 29 March to 12 April: The Central America Women's Network is holding seven speaker events nationally to raise awareness of women's rights and gender equality issues in Honduras and Central America. Events will take place in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrew's. The events are free and open to the public. The event will include speeches by women activists from Honduras, the presentation of recent research and the screening of a documentary, as well as refreshments and music. Contact Neville Shepherd on 01865 761630, email neville.shepherd@metronet.co.uk. 26 May: The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in association with UNA-UK will host the 'International Day of Peacekeepers 8th Annual Conference: Creating a Secure Foundation for the Peacebuilders' at the RUSI offices on Whitehall. This annual conference is one of the UK's mosts authoritative reviews of UN peacekeeping. The conference fee of £48 includes documents and refreshments during the day. A debate panel will focus on what is holding the world back from achieving the Millennium Development Goals – and what must be done to meet the 2015 deadline for achieving them. Followed by questions from the floor. The panel will feature Malcolm Harper, UNA Former Director, Rt. Hon. People are invited to register to come, click here for more information. 18 June: UNA UK's 2011 policy-making conference will take place at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff. UNA-UK's policy objectives are debated and agreed at this conference, providing memberrs with an opportunity to help shape UNA-UK policy. This year conference fees start at just £20 (£15 for students) which we hope will enable supporters to attend and help formulate policy objectives for 2011 - 2013. The United Nations Working Group on Enforced Disappearances has recorded more than 50,000 cases of this human rights abuse in more than 80 countries in the past 30 years. Dr Michael Willis of the Middle East Centre, University of Oxford will be assessing the significance of the "Arab Spring", drawing particularly on his studies on Tunisia.
