UNA-UK Annual Conference 2006 took place at Durham University's Trevelyan College from Friday 21- Sunday 23 April. You can read more about about Annual Conference 2006, including a letter from Conference chair Andrew Boakes, in the July-September 2006 issue of New World. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KEYNOTE ADDRESS SHASHI THAROOR United Nations Under-Secretary-General Shashi Tharoor delivered the keynote address on 'the future of the UN' in Durham Cathedral on Saturday, 22 April. In addition to members of UNA-UK , local parliamentarians, postgraduate students and academics were in attendance. Click here the read the text of the speech. Mr Tharoor has a wealth of UN experience, having occupied senior positions in peacekeeping and humanitarian affairs and serving as a senior adviser to the Secretary-General. He currently leads the UN's Department of Public Information. In this capacity he has led the reform of one of the largest departments in the UN Secretariat, with some 750 staff and field offices in 63 countries around the world.
