Keynote address: Shashi Tharoor
Then United Nations Under-Secretary-General Shashi Tharoor delivered the keynote address on 'The future of the UN' in Durham Cathedral on Saturday, 22 April. Attending alongside members of UNA-UK were local parliamentarians, postgraduate students and academics. Click here to read the text of the speech.
Mr Tharoor has a wealth of UN experience, having occupied senior positions in peacekeeping and humanitarian affairs and serving as a senior adviser to the Secretary-General. He headed the UN's Department of Public Information until early 2007. In this capacity he led the reform of one of the largest departments in the UN Secretariat, with some 750 staff and field offices in 63 countries around the world.
